In recent times there has been some controversy (and many misconceptions)
on the subject of “LOUDNESS”. “Make it louder than everyone
else’s CD!” has been the unfortunate and continual cry requested
of mastering houses everywhere. The best of the mastering engineers across the
globe know that this has led to a multitude of substandard “hyper-compressed”
recording releases where clarity, dynamics and depth — along with genuine
musicality — have been squashed out of the recordings and sacrificed at
the altar of “loudness”.
Unfortunately, since the customer is always right, it is often difficult to
resist this trend and some people continue to demand extreme limiting (“hyper-compression”
and “shred”) in the mistaken belief that the super hot mix will
sound more impressive on radio or at the A&R department’s audition
system.
The fact is however that it won’t. Independent tests have proved conclusively
that over compressed masters do not sound any louder when passed through the
transmission chains of FM radio stations.
Loudness is important, but punch and subjective loudness can be achieved without
compromising other important qualities, but there is a limit (pun intended!)
BabyBear will deliver what you hope to achieve but will advise against the severe
“hyper-compression” techniques sometimes employed and demanded by
some of the less well-informed sectors of the industry.
We can do that — it’s easy. But listen to the alternative. It is
better!
